Frequently asked Questions and Answers
What are the common issues evaluated and treated:
Skin Cancer, Allergic Reactions, Scarring (Burns, Traumatic, Post-surgical), Insect Bites, and Varicose Veins
How does Dr. Lin determine the Impairment Rating for Skin Conditions?
Usually based on the AMA guides, 5th edition, evaluating the Signs and Symptoms, ADLs, and Frequency of Treatments Needed. Also, impairment is based on the examples seen in Chapter 8.7, pages 178-187. For example, for Skin Cancer, these are some of the general criteria: (1) Extent of signs of sun damage, (2) frequency of treatment with liquid nitrogen for actinic keratosis. (3) Extent of sun exposure at work. (4) Extent of recreational sun exposure and pre-employment sun exposure. (5) Personal history of skin cancer. (6) Extent of need for future treatment and surveillance for future skin cancers.
What are some common procedures that are requested for the treatment of various skin conditions?
- Skin Cancers/ Pre-cancers- liquid nitrogen, photodynamic therapy with aminolevulinic acid, excision, electrodesiccation and curettage, Mohs surgery.
- Scars- bleaching cream, chemical peels, fractional laser resurfacing
- Varicose veins- Sclerotherapy, Clarivein, Endovenous ablation

Skin Cancer Treatment
Biopsy and Diagnosis: Accurate identification of skin lesions to determine malignancy.
Treatment Options:
- Topical Treatments: For less aggressive forms of skin cancer, creams or gels are applied directly to the skin, targeting cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
- Surgical Procedures: Including excision and Mohs surgery, which involves removing cancerous tissue layer by layer while preserving healthy tissue.
- Radiation Therapy: Utilizing high-energy rays to kill cancer cells, often employed when surgery isn’t an option.
- GentleCure (Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy): A non-invasive, surgery-free treatment for basal and squamous cell skin cancers, offering a pain-free alternative with no cutting or long recovery time.

Scar Treatment
Scarring from burns, trauma, or surgery can impact both function and appearance. Our approach includes:
- Topical Treatments: Use of silicone gel sheets or ointments to reduce the size, hardness, redness, and swelling of raised scars.
- Injections: Corticosteroid injections to shrink raised scars and keloids, and 5-FU or bleomycin injections to flatten scars and alleviate symptoms.
- Procedures: Cryosurgery to freeze and reduce scar tissue, laser resurfacing to diminish scar appearance, and surgical revision for large or restrictive scars.

Varicose Veins Treatment
Varicose veins can lead to discomfort and more serious complications if left untreated. Our vascular specialists offer:
- Minimally Invasive Procedures:
- Laser Treatment: Using focused light to close off varicose veins.
- Radiofrequency Ablation: Employing heat to seal affected veins.
- Mechano-Chemical Occlusion: Combining mechanical and chemical methods to treat veins.
- Varithena: A foam injection that collapses varicose veins.
- Sclerotherapy: Injecting a solution to close smaller varicose veins.
- Microphlebectomy: Removing varicose veins through small skin punctures.
- Expert Care: Our experienced physicians utilize state-of-the-art techniques to ensure effective results with minimal discomfort and downtime.
